How Brenda Ramer Is Bringing Ocean Science to the Mountains and Inspiring the Next Generation of Marine Innovators

Brenda Ramer built Team ECCO to prove that curiosity can travel farther than geography, bringing marine science to communities that many assume are too far from the sea to matte

Humanity still knows surprisingly little about its own oceans. As of early 2026, only about 28.6 percent of the global seafloor has been mapped using modern high-resolution technology. At the same time, scientists continue to warn that ocean literacy remains limited among young people, despite the ocean’s essential role in regulating the climate, supporting global food supplies, and producing roughly half of the oxygen on Earth.

For many children growing up hundreds of miles from the coast, the ocean feels distant and disconnected from everyday life. Brenda Ramer has spent nearly two decades changing that perception.

As founder of Team ECCO, Ramer has created an immersive marine science experience in one of the least expected places imaginable. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, almost 600 miles from the nearest coastline, Team ECCO features a 2,200-gallon shark habitat where students hand-feed bamboo sharks, observe animal behavior, and learn the principles of marine biology through direct experience.

For Ramer, placing a shark tank in the mountains was never unusual. It was the solution to a problem she had experienced herself.

“I didn’t see blue water until I was in my mid-30s,” she says. “I fell in love with it and thought, how do I bring it to the mountains?”

After returning from a trip to the Florida Keys, Ramer asked her students how many had ever seen clear ocean water. More than half had not. Rather than accept geography as a permanent obstacle, she left the classroom and founded Team ECCO in 2007 with a mission to make marine science accessible regardless of where children lived.

Recognizing that ocean literacy received little attention within traditional K-12 education, she initially focused on school field trips that allowed students to engage directly with marine life. A small classroom opened in 2009, and two years later the organization expanded into its current facility, creating a permanent home for its growing educational programs.

Today, Team ECCO welcomes thousands of visitors each year while extending its reach through educational classes and outreach programs across 11 counties. Much of that impact happens beyond the walls of the aquarium. Ramer and her team transport live marine animals and educational equipment directly into communities, often traveling nearly two hours to deliver a single hour-long program for students who might otherwise never experience marine science firsthand.

Accessibility remains central to the organization’s philosophy. Admission prices are intentionally kept affordable, with free entry for military families, discounted admission for teachers and first responders, and complimentary educational programming for children with exceptional needs. Team ECCO has also broadened its audience beyond schools, offering programs for seniors and adult learning groups to reinforce the idea that environmental education should be available to everyone.

The organization’s name now represents Engaged, Connected, Committed to the Ocean, reflecting a mission that extends well beyond traditional aquarium education.

Its programming is designed around curiosity and exploration. Sea Base delivers hands-on learning inside the aquarium, Sea Link brings traveling educational experiences into communities, and Sea Ventures immerses participants in authentic field research, including shark-tagging expeditions.

Students begin by learning the foundations of scientific observation. They identify marine species, distinguish fish characteristics, and practice recording objective observations rather than assumptions. As they progress, they investigate topics including coral reef ecology, water quality, marine weather systems, and ecosystem dynamics while interacting directly with aquatic animals and reptiles.

One of the organization’s most distinctive learning spaces is its shark laboratory, home to bamboo, horn, and epaulette sharks. There, students observe behavior, identify variables, collect data, and practice the same scientific methods used by professional researchers before applying those skills during field experiences.

“We don’t want them putting human emotions on the animals,” Ramer explains. “They learn to write only what they actually, and scientifically, observe.”

For Ramer, marine education is not about leaving students overwhelmed by environmental challenges. It is about giving them confidence that solutions remain possible.

Having spent more than three decades diving throughout the Caribbean, she has witnessed firsthand the dramatic changes affecting coral reefs. Yet she deliberately chooses optimism over discouragement.

“People are afraid of what they don’t understand,” she says. “If I can help someone understand why the ocean matters and inspire them enough to keep asking questions, then maybe they’ll become the person who finds the next solution.”

That philosophy is already producing results. Former students have gone on to careers in marine science, engineering, education, conservation, and skilled trades. Some discovered entirely new passions through their exposure to marine research, including one student who shifted from aspiring marine biologist to marine engineer after participating in Team ECCO’s programs.

Ultimately, Ramer hopes the lessons extend far beyond ocean science.

“Just because you’re being raised in rural North Carolina doesn’t mean you can never be an astronaut. It doesn’t mean you can never run your own business,” she says. “Instead of looking at what you think you can’t do, look at what your possibilities are.”

In the Blue Ridge Mountains, where sharks swim hundreds of miles from the nearest ocean, those possibilities have become tangible. Team ECCO stands as a reminder that curiosity is not limited by geography, and that sometimes the journey to understanding the world’s oceans begins far from the sea.
