Glenn D. Glasgow’s career is fueled by a deep passion for storytelling and entrepreneurship. With four published books, a recurring “wise man” character, and a lifelong fascination with dialogue-driven narratives, he developed PHZED, a t-shirt brand built entirely around original quotes from his fiction. For Glasgow, clothing is more than just merchandise. Each shirt acts as an extension of his literary world, offering wearable guidance for young adults and their families.
The brand finds its foundation in his books Phzed, Little Orphan Andy, Yard Wars, and Our Market. In these stories, characters encounter a mentor who shares wisdom through concise, memorable lines. Glasgow selected those lines and transformed them into the foundation for his apparel designs.
PHZED apparel emerged from that moment of inspiration. Glasgow explains that the designs come from text that already carries emotional resonance, allowing the shirts to convey meaning beyond the words themselves. For him, including the quotes is not only about visual appeal. His process always begins with the story, with the clothing coming afterward.
A distinctive symbol ties his writing and fashion identity together: a fish. Originally sketched during his junior high years, the fish became central to the brand’s visual identity. “It started as a fish out of water with a hook in its mouth. Over time, I modified the design but kept the idea of being out of place. It represents adapting and surviving,” Glasgow says. Today, the fish serves as the official mascot and a tangible connection between his literary and apparel worlds.
Glasgow’s creative instincts also trace back to film. A devoted movie fan, he grew up fascinated by how dialogue and small lines could shape entire stories and character arcs. Watching narratives expand from a brief idea into full-length films captivated him. That attention to quotable moments influenced his writing style and eventually the identity of his apparel brand. “I’ve always loved how movies use lines that stay with you. That inspired me to create characters with their own memorable quotes, which led me to where I am today,” he explains.

One quote appears repeatedly across his products: “Prayers are answered in the order in which they are received, so hang in there.” Glasgow notes that this line has always resonated with him and now guides the brand. PHZED avoids political or religious associations, focusing instead on messages that are universally relatable. “Our goal is to empower and encourage people, not divide them. Our T-shirts reflect that purpose,” he adds.
The brand targets young adults aged 14 to 17 and their families, mirroring the audience of his books. To make shopping easier, PHZED focuses on a capsule collection. Glasgow says, “We wanted to keep the line simple, avoiding extra categories. In the interest of simplicity, we stick to T-shirts.”
Glasgow credits his family for inspiring his creative journey. He recalls relatives, avid readers of his work, encouraging him to pursue apparel. “One relative read my books and asked to use a quote at a family reunion. That’s when a light bulb went off,” he shares. After the launch, he saw how the T-shirts sparked conversation, reinforcing his belief that apparel can serve as a tool for communication.
His personal story also informs the brand’s philosophy. After losing part of his leg to gangrene, Glasgow found renewed determination through the support of friends and family. That experience shaped Phzed, the book that gives the apparel its name and underlying philosophy. The term represents navigating uncertainty and adapting to life’s challenges, an idea reflected in both the fish imagery and the printed messages.
Glasgow is expanding the story-to-product concept by developing a talking fish plushie, currently in prototype form. The plushie will recite the same quotes found on the shirts in Glasgow’s own voice. “The characters in my books talk to each other,” he says. “I wanted to bring that into real life and see where it leads.” If successful, plushies featuring other characters from his stories may follow.
PHZED apparel represents the power of narrative-driven branding. As Glasgow writes quotes for his characters, he also embeds them into the everyday lives of families, stitched into cotton and soon voiced through plushies. The brand illustrates how storytelling and design can unite into a single expression grounded in hope and resilience.
