What sparked the creation of the Campus Chronicles Podcast?
Brooke Young: The student leaders currently at university will eventually lead our society. In a world that often feels overwhelming and overstimulating, we at the Campus Chronicles Team wanted to create a trusted resource that would explore everything from benign topics such as productivity to more taboo topics like unsafe relationships or body image concerns.
The idea is to complement academic learning with insights from those who’ve been there, done that, and want to share openly. We aim to help students grow not only academically, but personally and professionally as well.
As the host, I want students to know that our podcast is a trusted resource led by a heart-centred person who genuinely wants to see them thrive.
Brooke, how has creating and hosting Campus Chronicles shaped your own journey as an advocate for student leaders?
Brooke Young: I’ve always been passionate about student leadership: mostly because I was one myself. At uni, I began working professionally as a broadcaster and performer, while also running my own small business, competing in scholarship pageants, and writing a children’s book. Juggling all of this while staying focused on academics was tougher than I realised.
Campus Chronicles is very much the resource I wish I’d had during my university years—a place to explore the tough, the taboo, and the honest conversations. And a place to become more of myself. Through the podcast, my hope is that students feel empowered to know they can create anything, supported by sustainable advice, tools, and resources to follow through.
In a world that feels increasingly disconnected and fragmented, how does Campus Chronicles bring student leaders together for honest, authentic conversation?
Brooke Young: I don’t want to shy away from difficult conversations. With leadership comes increased challenges, and I want the podcast to reflect both the highs and the lows with honesty through authentic campus conversations. Pursuing higher education is an incredible tool for self-development. The podcast reflects this, bringing students together to talk about the challenges that too often go unspoken.
What core values guide each episode?
Brooke Young: One of our core values is the belief that student leaders have just as much to teach us as we have to teach them. I want the podcast to be a melting pot of ideas from different demographics, ages, and cultures. I’m eager to share the tips, resources, and strategies I wish I’d had at university—but I’m just as eager to learn from the next generation.
How do you balance tackling serious topics like mental health and unsafe relationships with uplifting messages that affirm and energise listeners?
Brooke Young: We all consume more content than we realise. From social media to podcasts to music—it’s everywhere. Often, those messages are in conflict with one another. Over time, this can be disorienting and lead to uncertainty about where we stand or how we feel on certain issues. In this climate, misinformation thrives.
That’s why I want to tackle serious topics—because these challenges are real. I aim to provide a safe, informed space where difficult subjects can be explored without judgement. It’s also a space where misinformation is challenged, and students are equipped with facts and context to form their own opinions.
One episode I’m proud of is regarding Male Body Image. Body & Mind: Navigating the Pressure of Male Image with George Mycock (Ep. 30). Another, not yet released, explores unsafe and unhealthy patterns in relationships and friendships as well as relationship red flags.
What do you want future student leaders to take away from an episode?
Brooke Young: The tools to think critically, question everything, and make decisions that feel authentic and aligned to who they are.
Guest selection is an important piece of the puzzle. The podcast features a wide range of voices from current uni students to neurodiverse consultants and fitness mentors. How do you ensure each story feels authentic and empowering?
Brooke Young: When selecting guests and topics, I always keep students in mind. I feel a strong responsibility to address a wide range of issues. Having diverse students as well as guest speakers from academic and industry is important to maintaining balance. My top priority is to ensure that the conversations we have are relevant to today’s uni students—and I’m always open to suggestions from listeners.
