A filmmaker’s vision for spreading positivity, spirituality, and human connection

by Callum Turner

Acclaimed filmmaker David Hansen, known for his diverse portfolio from feature films to documentaries, television, VR, digital content, and video games, is spreading ‘humanity in the form of God’ with his project – God Complex. This innovative web series aims to spread messages of positivity and spirituality through contemporary means.

David, who has enjoyed a successful career in the entertainment industry, is driven by a passion for spreading goodwill. God Complex is his latest endeavor to inspire and uplift audiences worldwide. This series explores ideas that, in today’s world, social media is a potent tool for change. This series imagines a scenario where the Holy Trinity – God, the Holy Spirit, and Jesus – descend to Earth in human form, only to discover they have no divine powers, relying solely on their voices to enact change. They decide to harness the power of social media, the most influential modern tool, to spread their messages of love, compassion, and positivity.

Shot from iPhone, the web series is very unpretentious, with very intimate portraits. “I wanted the audience to be flabbergasted, mesmerized even – enthralled in what we’ve captured – showing how God wants us to do something like this, and present a show of compassion, empathy, and love to humankind in 2024. I think the time’s right for a show like this,” David states, expressing his enthusiasm for this web series, “And, I think there’s an appetite for it.”

Despite being self-funded for this web series, David acknowledges the limitations of working alone and invites collaboration from other creatives, organizations, and sponsors. He envisions partnerships where brands can lend their support in exchange for product placements within the series, utilizing his extensive industry knowledge to create mutually beneficial arrangements. This approach not only helps sustain the project but also amplifies its reach and impact.

The series takes an unconventional approach, blending elements of mockumentary, reality, and improv. “I have released short-form clips on TikTok allowing viewers to experience the story in a personalized way, and are releasing the long edited version of these episodes on the TheGuidedOldDude rumble channel to reach a wider audience,” shares David. His TikTok channel, Guided Old Dude, features hundreds of videos, allowing viewers to curate their own viewing experiences. This approach creates an organic, individualized narrative, where each clip stands alone yet contributes to many stories. Furthermore, David hopes for potential television deals.

This web series is deeply personal for David, who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. His own experiences with mental health, combined with a profound connection to spirituality, drive the project’s narrative. His journey of struggling with his own identity and purpose is mirrored in the series, offering authenticity and depth.

David’s commitment to authenticity is further exemplified in his casting choices. The role of Jesus is played by an individual he discovered singing on the streets, someone who currently lives off the grid in a self-built cart. This casting not only brings authenticity to the portrayal but also offers a powerful connection to the homeless community, a cause close to David’s heart.

“What I would hope to see is people uploading videos like I’ve done, and I will curate them. We will have this beautiful tapestry of all these different lightworkers doing all this great work on earth,” the filmmaker says. His vision is to create a global movement of positivity, showcased through the series.

Ultimately, this web series seeks to counter the negativity prevalent in media today. “It’s important to show the best sides of humanity. Even if you watch the news, it is all clickbait negative stories. There’s very few pure love, pure great stories. And there’s a lot of people out there doing it, and they haven’t been showcased,” David states. He wants to showcase the best of humanity, offering an alternative to the sensationalism that dominates news and social feeds. He truly hopes the series inspires viewers to bring the humanity much needed in this world.
