For Cameron Richards, LMT, founder and owner of Somatic Massage Therapy & Spa, the path into massage therapy did not begin as a lifelong ambition but evolved through circumstance, discovery, and ultimately, purpose. After a period of career transition, he explored holistic wellness education, initially considering acupuncture before completing massage therapy training.

“That experience gave me a much deeper understanding of the body and of how to truly care for clients,” Richards says. “It ultimately laid the foundation for what would later become Somatic Massage Therapy & Spa.”

Now operating for 15 years, Somatic Massage Therapy & Spa functions as both a massage and skincare practice, offering services that span therapeutic massage, facials, body treatments, and wellness-oriented therapies. Over time, the business has expanded its service offerings while maintaining a consistent emphasis on individualized care. According to Richards, the goal has never been limited to providing standalone treatments but rather to create an environment where clients feel understood and supported in their broader wellness goals.

From the outset, personalization has shaped the spa’s operating philosophy. Richards explains that each client interaction begins well before a session starts, with therapists reviewing intake forms and discussing specific concerns. “When someone walks through the door, it’s important to first understand why they are here,” he says. “We are not just providing a service, we are responding to a need that’s personal to them.”

That mindset influences how services are delivered. “Therapists are encouraged to adapt techniques, pressure, and treatment combinations based on the individual rather than applying a uniform approach,” Richards says. From his perspective, this flexibility allows practitioners to respond more thoughtfully to physical tension, stress patterns, or skincare considerations that vary from person to person. It also fosters stronger therapist-client relationships, something he views as central to long-term wellness outcomes and ultimately client satisfaction.

The client experience extends beyond the treatment room. Richards frames the spa’s atmosphere as intentionally calming, with a welcoming reception area designed to help visitors transition from daily stress into a more relaxed state. “Clients are invited to arrive early, enjoy tea, and spend time unwinding before their session begins,” he explains. “We want people to feel comfortable the moment they walk in.”

To support ongoing care, the business also offers a monthly membership model structured without contractual commitment, which allows clients to easily maintain consistency in their treatments. Richards notes that this structure makes it easier for clients to achieve their health goals and offers flexibility in how they approach their wellness routines. Complementing this is a rewards program that provides points for services and add-ons, creating additional incentives to explore different services depending on their needs.

While these offerings contribute to client retention, Richards places equal importance on measurable client progress. From his perspective, massage and skincare treatments are most meaningful when they support tangible improvements, whether that involves reduced physical tension, enhanced mobility, or overall relaxation.

“This broader view of care has led the spa to cultivate relationships beyond its own walls,” Richards notes. He explains an informal wellness network that includes additional wellness practitioners and local health resources. Clients seeking more support may be referred to professionals aligned with their needs, from chiropractic care to herbal wellness guidance or fitness support. “If someone needs more than what we provide here, we want to point them in the right direction,” he says. “Their overall well-being matters most.”

Such collaborations reflect the spa’s perspective that wellness is cumulative rather than isolated. By connecting clients with aligned services, the business aims to support longer-term lifestyle improvements rather than one-time relief. Richards believes this integrated outlook helps clients remain engaged in their health journeys while reinforcing trust in the spa’s recommendations.

Fifteen years after its founding, Somatic Massage Therapy & Spa continues to operate with the same relationship-driven philosophy that shaped its beginnings. For Richards, growth has never been defined solely by expansion but by the depth of client connection and the consistency of care delivered.

“We have always tried to make the experience personal,” he says. “When people feel heard, when they feel cared for, that’s when real wellness begins, and that’s what keeps them coming back.”
