David Reid Robinson did not set out to reinvent recovery. With more than two decades as an infrastructure architect, he built a career designing complex, secure, and dependable systems. However, in 2015, a devastating car accident forced him into a different kind of problem-solving. After shattering his tibia and fibula, Robinson endured 13 surgeries over two and a half years, navigating a long, frustrating recovery defined by immobility and dependence on crutches.
That experience would ultimately shape his most impactful innovation. “I tried every crutch or crutch alternative without finding a device that gave me the mobility and versatility that I wanted,” Robinson recalls. “So I designed and built it.”
What began as a necessity between surgeries quickly evolved into the foundation of XLEG, a company built on a simple but powerful premise: recovery should not mean putting life on hold. Robinson’s early prototype, assembled with ingenuity and persistence, allowed him to move freely, even play soccer with his children, while remaining non-weight-bearing. It was a breakthrough not just in mobility, but in mindset.
Today, XLEG represents a new category of recovery technology. Designed as a hands-free crutch alternative, the device redistributes weight from the lower leg to the thigh, enabling users to walk naturally while keeping their hands free. Traditional crutches often lead to reduced mobility, delayed return to work, muscle atrophy, and higher long-term healthcare costs. By contrast, XLEG enables earlier movement, which can accelerate recovery timelines, reduce the need for extensive physiotherapy, and ultimately lower the financial burden on both individuals and healthcare systems.
Robinson has approached the development of XLEG with the same rigor he once applied to enterprise infrastructure. After refining early designs, he collaborated with orthopedic specialists, physiotherapists, and biomedical engineers to create a device that is both clinically informed and user-driven. The result is a lightweight, adjustable system with variable weight-loading capabilities, offering users precise control over their recovery process.
The company’s ambitions extend beyond product innovation. Manufactured in Calgary, XLEG is positioned to support local economies while scaling globally. With FDA Class I registration and ongoing studies, including a multi-year research initiative with Colorado State University, Robinson is working to validate the device’s impact and expand access through insurance networks and international distribution. “I developed the XLEG out of necessity,” he says. “But I realized it could change the way people recover.”
That realization continues to drive the company forward. At its core, XLEG is about restoring independence, helping people move, work, and live fully even in the midst of injury. It challenges the longstanding assumption that recovery must be passive, offering instead a future where healing and activity go hand in hand.
