Before we begin, please share your origin story with us.
Angilie Kapoor: My conscious leadership origin story actually started as far back as into my childhood though I didn’t recognize it until just a few years ago. My ‘challenging the status quo’ started as early as the 3rd grade when I didn’t just want to sell a handful of chocolate easter bunnies for my school’s annual PTA fundraiser like all the other kids. I wanted to sell as many as possible and cover my neighborhood in those bunnies which turned out to be over 300 chocolate easter bunnies being sold! This trend followed into my 5th grade year where I just couldn’t fathom or accept that our school did not have a school newspaper therefore, I put together a team and created one. Several incidences like these continued throughout high school – being class vice-president, the co-chair for the pep rally committee, etc.
After high school, I found myself going to college full time as well as working full time in different industries – trying to figure out where my talents and passions were. I eventually ended up in the healthcare field mostly by familiarity as my mother was a career nurse and I had grown comfortable with being in hospitals frequently. This was the beginning of my unknowing journey to find fulfillment and purpose in my profession. Initially starting as a clinical professional, it wasn’t long until I decided to venture into the administrative side of the industry. My track record became frequent position and role changes which lead to my climbing into the healthcare management and leadership ranks.
Now, this is where my official conscious leadership origin story actually started. My promotion into my first people management role defied my usual norm of getting settled and being successful in my new role quickly. Instead, I found myself seriously struggling with not only the typical external challenges but also in dealing with lots of internal struggles I had never experienced before – feeling lost, overwhelmed, ill-prepared, out of my element, unsupported – you name it, I was experiencing it! I tried all of the things my colleagues, my director and upper management told me to do – I read hundreds of books, took all kinds of courses, attended tons of conferences and workshops – but all that managed to do was overwhelm me with information and only made me more confused.
A few months later, all of my overwhelm, anxiety and other internal struggles I was having not to mention the typical external challenges on top of that, finally built up to a point where I uncharacteristically exploded during a team meeting. This was my proverbial wakeup call that I had to do something different because obviously what I had been doing wasn’t working. Not to mention that I was becoming someone I didn’t even recognize and definitely didn’t like.
I found myself sitting down and asking myself some really tough, deep, soul-searching questions. As a result, I decided to change my approach in learning and mastering the typical leadership concepts and began immediately focusing on self-discovery and becoming more self-aware. A few months after embarking on my self-discovery and self-awareness journey, I found myself sitting at my desk with a genuine feeling of feeling more confident, feeling more comfortable and competent and being more effective and productive in my new role.
My ‘sink or swim’ and ‘trial by fire’ first management role experience allowed me to discover several truths and concepts that I use today as a Conscious Leadership Coach to help empower workplace, business and life aspiring leaders:
A title doesn’t make you a leader
- Though most are under this impression – managing and leading are not one in the same
- Leadership is a state of being and a journey, not a position or a destination
- You can only lead others as effectively as you lead yourself
*In order to lead yourself effectively, you must first know yourself and learn to like but most importantly love yourself - Leadership is foundationally all about the human experience
What inspired your personal journey into wellness and how has it shaped your professional path?
Angilie Kapoor: My personal journey into wellness was a profound response to a series of escalating health challenges that began in my childhood and significantly impacted my professional life. For as long as I can remember, I have suffered from chronic migraines, a condition that persisted into adulthood. In 2012, I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, an autoimmune arthritis that further complicated my health landscape. A few years later, in 2015, I faced an infertility diagnosis due to diminished ovarian reserve, adding another layer to my health journey. The culmination of these conditions, alongside the intense pressure of working in a high-stress healthcare management role, led to two episodes of clinical burnout in 2016, forcing me to step back and reevaluate my priorities.
These experiences marked a turning point, igniting a ‘consciousness crisis’ that underscored the importance of listening to my body. I realized that I had allowed these diagnoses to define me, often masking symptoms with medication rather than addressing the underlying issues. This awareness inspired a shift towards a more mindful approach to wellness, questioning the foods I ate and the products I used.
The true catalyst for change came in 2022 when my husband and I decided to take a leap of faith, selling everything to move to Bali, Indonesia. This decision, although daunting due to my health concerns, opened a new chapter of exploration and healing. Traveling through Bali, India, Ecuador, and Mexico broadened my horizons and introduced me to diverse lifestyles and diets. Remarkably, by 2023, both my Ankylosing Spondylitis and chronic migraines went into remission, allowing me to stop the potent treatments I had relied on.
This journey has not only transformed my personal health but has also reshaped my professional path. It has empowered me to broaden how I guide others in their journeys, taking a more holistic approach, helping them listen to their bodies, reclaim their identities, and achieve a balanced, fulfilling life. My experiences have intensified my passion for supporting others in overcoming life’s challenges with confidence and resilience, using the insights and empowerment I’ve gained through my own transformation.
In the fast-paced world of entrepreneurship, how do you maintain a balance between mental, emotional, and physical health?
Angilie Kapoor: In the fast-paced world of entrepreneurship, maintaining a balance between mental, emotional, and physical health is essential yet challenging. One of the foundational strategies I’ve embraced is the creation and implementation of healthy habits and routines. By striving to be proactive rather than reactive, I’ve learned the importance of being intentional with my choices—deciding how my day unfolds, how I feel, and how I respond to various circumstances.
My journey of self-awareness and self-discovery began during my first healthcare management role, where two transformational concepts profoundly influenced my approach: mindset and empowering morning routines. These ideas became the cornerstone of my daily life, prompting me to create a structured morning routine that has since evolved to include both daily and nightly practices. This structure allows me to address and maintain the health of my, what I call, ‘5 core human components’—physical, mental, emotional, energetic, and spiritual.
Incorporating these components into my routines ensures that each aspect of my well-being receives the attention it deserves. I’ve also learned the critical importance of listening to my body, mind, and energy. This means allowing myself the space to rest and recharge, even amidst tight deadlines and hectic schedules. Always keeping in mind a motto I’ve come to love, ‘you can’t serve others from an empty cup.’ Acknowledging when to pause and replenish has been vital to sustaining my energy and focus in the long run.
Ultimately, maintaining balance in entrepreneurship is about empowerment and intentionality. By integrating mindful practices and routines into my daily life, I can navigate the demands of entrepreneurship while nurturing my overall well-being. This approach not only enhances my performance but also enriches my personal fulfillment, enabling me to thrive in both my professional and personal life.
Your company, Oversight Global, focuses profoundly on conscious leadership. How important is mental health in your approach to leadership? What steps do you take to nurture it within yourself and your team?
Angilie Kapoor: Mental health is a cornerstone of our approach to conscious leadership at Oversight Global. Recognizing its profound impact, we ensure that mental health is prioritized in all aspects of our operations. The journey into understanding the power of mindset was one of the most transformative experiences of my career. It reshaped my approach to leadership and personal growth, leading me to write two books and a workbook on the subject, with mindset being the central theme.
Mindset isn’t just a concept; it’s everything. Success in any endeavor is deeply rooted in having the right mindset. This realization inspired me to develop the ‘Leader Mindset Activation’ method—a structured approach to nurturing mental health and unlocking leadership potential. This method is divided into three key phases: Awaken!, Activate!, and Harness the Power!
The Awaken! phase is pivotal for creating awareness and consciousness of one’s mindset. It’s about understanding how our minds can either hinder or propel us towards success. In the Activate! phase, we delve into actionable tools and techniques to shift and strengthen our mindset. This is where we lay the groundwork for a resilient, positive outlook that supports achieving personal and professional goals. Lastly, the Harness the Power! phase ensures that these mindset practices become consistent, forming a powerful habit that allows individuals to live purposefully and with fulfillment.
These phases are not just theoretical exercises; they are actively implemented within myself and our team. We foster an environment where mental health is openly discussed and supported, encouraging team members to engage with the Leader Mindset Activation method. By doing so, we cultivate a workplace culture that values mental well-being as much as professional achievement.
Through these practices, we empower ourselves and each team member to nurture their mental health, enabling them to thrive both personally and professionally. This approach not only enhances individual performance but also strengthens the collective resilience and success of our organization.
What does conscious leadership mean to you, and how do you practice it in your business? How do you encourage your clients to employ conscious leadership?
Angilie Kapoor: Conscious leadership, for me, is an evolving journey of self-awareness and self-discovery. It’s about recognizing and embodying our inner phenomenal leader—the true, authentic self that we each possess. At Oversight Global, we facilitate this journey by helping clients peel back the layers of societal expectations, pressures, and self-imposed limitations, revealing their core brilliance and potential.
In my experience, conscious leadership begins with mastering self-leadership. Before we can effectively lead others, we must first understand and lead ourselves and in our own lives. This understanding was born from pivotal moments in my career that highlighted the necessity of self-growth and authenticity.
At Oversight Global, we practice conscious leadership by guiding clients through transformative processes that encourage them to explore and connect with their true selves. Our mission is to address the “consciousness crisis” by nurturing self-awareness and creating environments that value authenticity and empathy.
To help clients adopt conscious leadership, we share several key lessons from my management experience:
- Embrace Your Inner Leader: Recognize that success starts from within. We each have the capacity to lead ourselves and make a positive impact in the world.
- Prioritize Self-Care: Taking care of yourself is essential for effective leadership. Focus on nurturing your well-being to lead others more effectively.
- Leadership Beyond the Workplace: Leadership isn’t limited to professional roles; it influences all aspects of life and how we impact others and our communities.
- Effective Communication: Strive to understand others before seeking to be understood. This approach helps prevent conflicts and fosters learning.
- Retain Your Power: You control your reactions and feelings. Don’t allow external forces to dictate how you feel.
- Internal Reflection: Address internal struggles to alleviate external challenges and naturally enhance your leadership capabilities.
By integrating these principles, our clients can cultivate conscious leadership within themselves, creating a ripple effect that extends to their teams and communities. This journey, though challenging, is profoundly rewarding, enabling individuals to live authentically and impact the world positively.
What role does self-awareness play in your leadership and wellness journey?
Angilie Kapoor: Self-awareness has been, and continues to be, a driving force in my leadership and wellness journey, shaping the way I navigate both personal and professional landscapes. From a young age, I found myself challenging the status quo, eager to explore my potential beyond the conventional paths laid before me. This innate curiosity and drive for authenticity set the stage for my lifelong journey of self-discovery.
As I ventured into my first management role in healthcare, I encountered challenges that were not only external but deeply internal. These struggles served as a wake-up call, pushing me to look inward and confront the aspects of myself that needed understanding and development. It was during this time that self-awareness became a cornerstone of my growth, prompting me to ask difficult questions and embark on a path of self-discovery.
By peeling back the layers of societal expectations and self-imposed limitations, I began to uncover my core values, behaviors, and true passions. This process of introspection and reflection allowed me to recognize and embrace my authentic self, which in turn, enhanced my ability to lead effectively. Understanding my own patterns and reactions enabled me to approach leadership with empathy and clarity, fostering environments where both I and my team could thrive.
In terms of wellness, self-awareness has been instrumental in identifying the factors that contribute to my physical and emotional health. By listening to my body and mind, I have learned to prioritize activities and habits that promote balance and fulfillment. This holistic approach has not only transformed my personal wellbeing but has also empowered me to guide others on their journeys towards wellness.
Ultimately, self-awareness has allowed me to live authentically and lead with intention. It has taught me that true leadership starts from within, and by understanding ourselves, we can better inspire and empower those around us. This journey of self-awareness is continuous, guiding me as I peel back layers to reveal the radiant potential within myself and others.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned about conscious leadership that continues to guide you today?
Angilie Kapoor: The most important lesson I’ve learned about conscious leadership, and one that continually guides me, is that leadership is fundamentally a state of being and an ongoing journey, not merely a position or a destination. This realization has profoundly influenced my approach to leadership, emphasizing the critical importance of self-leadership and understanding oneself.
Leadership, at its core, is about embracing the human experience. It’s not confined to titles or roles; instead, it’s about how we live our lives, interact with others, and influence the world around us. This perspective encourages me to focus on self-leadership first, as I believe that you can only lead others as effectively as you lead yourself. This involves knowing oneself deeply, recognizing personal strengths and areas for growth, and learning to love and accept oneself fully.
Understanding that leadership is a journey has shaped my actions and decisions by reinforcing the idea that personal growth is continuous and essential. It prompts me to approach each day as an opportunity to learn and evolve, both personally and professionally. This mindset not only guides my leadership style but also inspires those around me to embark on their own journeys of self-discovery and growth.
Moreover, recognizing the human aspect of leadership has highlighted the importance of empathy, communication, and connection. It reminds me that the impact we have on others extends beyond immediate interactions, affecting a broader community. This awareness drives me to lead with intention, fostering environments where people feel valued and understood.
Ultimately, viewing leadership as a state of being ensures that my actions and decisions are aligned with my core values and authentic self. It serves as a constant reminder that leadership is about more than just guiding others; it’s about creating a positive, lasting impact through genuine connection and continuous personal development.
